Fifth Book of Madrigals · No. 5
Claudio Monteverdi · 1605 · B♭ major · 68 bars · 116 chords analysed
The Fifth Book (1605) is Monteverdi's reply to the critic Giovanni Maria Artusi, who had attacked the unprepared dissonances of “Cruda Amarilli”. In the preface Monteverdi defends a “second practice” in which the words rule the harmony. The last pieces in the book add a basso continuo, pointing towards the Baroque.
