String Quartet, Op. 121

Gabriel Fauré · 1923–24 · G major · 679 bars · 1228 chords analysed

Fauré's last work, finished at 79; he asked that it not be played until after his death.

A string quartet — two violins, viola and cello — is often called a conversation between four friends. With only four voices, every chord is easy to see and hear, which makes quartets a wonderful way to study harmony.
