String Quartet No. 10, Op. 51 “Slavonic”

4 movements

Antonín Dvořák · 1879 · E♭ major · 1005 bars · 1067 chords analysed

Commissioned by a Hamburg quartet that asked for something “Slavonic”; the second movement is a dumka.

Dvořák wrote 14 string quartets. The best known is the “American” (1893), composed in three weeks during a summer holiday in Spillville, Iowa, with tunes that sound like folk songs but are all his own.
